Shining und die dunkle Wiedergeburt: Seit Niklas Kvarforth zwölf Jahre alt ist, werkelt der schwedische Künstler an seinem (musikalischen) Oeuvre. Als Mitbegründer des Depressive Black Metal verschrien, lässt sich Shinings Kunst spätestens seit „IV: The Eerie Cold“ (2005) nicht mehr in Genregrenzen einordnen. Mit dem Wiedergeburtsalbum „Shining“ (Soundcheck-Sieger!) beweisen Niklas und seine (neuen) Mannen erneut, dass sie zwischen Neoklassik, Black- sowie Heavy Metal und melancholischen Pop-Einsprengseln ihren eigenen Sound gefunden haben. Auf acht Seiten spüren wir in unserer großen Titelstory dem Phänomen Shining nach, rezensieren die wichtigsten Werke der Diskografie, führen Interviews mit Produzent Andy LaRocque (King Diamond), allen Bandmitgliedern sowie den beiden visuellen Künstlern Maxime Taccardi (K.F.R) und Claudio Marino. Als Kontrapunkt zu dieser Story zwischen Psychiatrie und Notaufnahme wenden wir uns mit unserem Co-Titel den aufstrebenden Ryujin aus Japan zu. Diese waren einst viele Jahre als Gyze unterwegs und erfahren nun eine Wiedergeburt, die es sich in sich hat – inklusive einer Tour durch Europa gemeinsam mit Pain und Konsorten. Wer lieber in Nostalgie schwelgt, der genießt unseren Ausflug mit Herrn Kuschke in die Geschichte von Desaster oder liest im Interview mit Cannibal-Corpse-Drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz, wie die Zeiten sich geändert haben. Als besonderes Highlight sind in dieser Ausgabe auch wieder acht Seiten Nachbericht zum Party.San Open Air zu finden – inklusive Interviews mit Underground-Aktivisten und -Aktivistinnen und persönlichen Eindrücken der anwesenden Redakteure. Dass wir auch wieder beim Masters Of Rock in Tschechien am Start waren, versteht sich von selbst. Auf den restlichen 224 Seiten erforschen wir, wie es unserem Auftrag entspricht, alle wichtigen Veröffentlichungen des Spätsommers und Frühherbstes – von den technischen Thrashern Quasarborn über den rauen Black Metal von Hammerfilosofi bis hin zu einer intensiven Auseinandersetzung mit der neuesten Nocte-Obducta-Scheibe ist für Fans jeglicher Fasson etwas dabei. Die Festival-Geheimtipps Black Hole Germania (Ende September) und Festival Metal Vouziers (April 2024) runden die Ausgabe ab.

Shining and a sinister rebirth: Since the age of twelve, artist Niklas Kvarforth has been working on his (musical) oeuvre. Once hailed as one of the founders of Depressive Black Metal, since at least “IV: The Eerie Cold” (2005) Shining’s Art may no longer be limited to one single and narrow genre. With the “comeback” or “rebirth” album “Shining” (winner of our soundcheck), Niklas and his (new) men prove once again that they have found their own and unique sound on the threshold between Neoclassic, Black- and Heavy Metal as well as melancholic Pop moments. On eight pages we try to explain the phenomenon Shining in our title story. The most important albums and releases are reviewed, interviews are conducted with producer Andy LaRocque (King Diamond), all members of the band as well as both visual artists, Maxime Taccardi (K.F.R.) and Claudio Marino. Setting a counterpoint to this sinister and dark cover story, we take a closer look at rising metal stars from Japan as co-title interview. Ryujin – who were around many years as Gyze – are experiencing a rebirth and want to show the world what they have to offer with their Samurai Metal: including a long European tour together with Pain this autumn! If you much rather want to experience some nostalgia, check our journey into the history of German Black Thrash band Desaster with Markus Kuschke. Or you may read the interesting interview with Cannibal Corpse drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz about how times have been changing.
